»Not healthy is a modern stereotype when it comes to salt. But is it really that bad, or is it a superfood? The truth lies somewhere in between, of course. First of all, we have to know which salt we are talking about.
In the last decades, food’s suitability for storage and transport plays a major role in food industry. It is not unusual that even natural sea salt has been robbed of many of its minerals and other nutrients. Ironically, they started adding iodine later – the so called refined iodized salt was born. It is better to stay away from this one, as it contains nothing our bodies would need. In addition, for every gram of refined salt, our body needs 23 hours and a lot of water to metabolize and excrete. The lack of water is slowing down our metabolism and toxins are rapidly loading in our tissues. The consequences are visible in form of cellulite, arthritis, rheumatism, high blood pressure, etc.
Sea salt that has not been refined and iodized is theoretically a good choice. However, because of the pollution we are causing to the oceans, it is questionable as well.
Again, Nature has planned everything in advance. It seems like in the Himalayas, just below the roof of the world, she prepared mines of salt that have been left intact for millions of years. Himalayan salt combines 84 different minerals that play a role in more than 1000 metabolic processes. It is rich in electrolytes which maintain an adequate and constant ratio of all the elements in our bodies and are therefore essential for proper functioning of our cells and tissues. They are also crucial for proper functioning of nerve and muscle system because they enable transmission of electrical signals throughout the body. These electrolytes are for example calcium, potassium, sodium, chloride, bicarbonates, etc. Another important element is iron, which makes the salt’s typical color – the higher the content of iron, the more pink is the color.
For every process that is taking place in our bodies, an ionized form of salt’s elements is needed. Without sodium and potassium, there would be no thinking or moving for us, because they maintain the appropriate voltage on cell membranes. The latter is essential for transferring of nerve impulses, leading into our thoughts and actions.
Treating different health issues with salt has been long known to humanity. In ancient Egypt they were using salt for treating headaches and skin problems. The Romans valued it as a metabolism and immune system booster. In 19th century, the use of salt for inhalation, drinking and baths was very popular.
It is for similar reasons that salt is still used today. It is known for its detoxification effects – prepare yourself a salt bath or drink a sole (1 tablespoon of Himalayan salt in ¼ liter of water) regularly on an empty stomach.
It is also useful for skin care and for disinfecting wounds and insect bites. Salt compresses are advised to put on sore muscles and aching joints. It can help with many other health problems, such as sinus problems, chronic colds, the throat and tonsils inflammation, bleeding gums, cracked skin around the nose, fever, poor digestion etc.
Many people brush their teeth with Himalayan salt and it is also a great and completely natural deodorant. We must not forget to mention its importance for athletes, as drinking diluted sale is a great way of rehydration.
And last but not least, Himalayan salt can be used as a »normal salt« for culinary uses. It has an especially rich and full flavor. It truly is an infinite source of health benefits, but it is good to know that Himalayan salt is not a medicine after all. It is only a natural food, containing nutrients that are important for us, but bring vitality to our bodies only when combined with a happy and natural lifestyle!
