Why PlanetBIO Cocoa?

Variety criollo. All PlanetBIO cocoa products originate from the cocoa variety criollo, which is considered the best and most appreciated cocoa variety on the planet. It is characterized by a rich complex aroma, full of subtle flavors that last and are appreciated by lovers of good chocolate. In comparison with other varieties of cocoa, criollo is demanding for cultivation and has a lower annual yield, therefore it represents only less than 5% of world cocoa production. Since its cultivation requires more knowledge and care, criollo cocoa products are significantly more expensive, but therefore of higher quality, tastier and more nutritious.

In 2012, PlanetBIO visited our cocoa suppliers from Peru. We checked the conditions in which PlanetBIO cocoa grows and were impressed by the integrity of producers.

Organic certificate & cultivation in accordance with the principles of permaculture. All PlanetBIO Cocoa products have an organic certificate, which is awarded by the European Commission, and at the same time they are grown under much more stringent principles. Our producers follow the principles of permaculture, because it is the most effective way for sustainable cocoa cultivation. Cocoa trees are planted in the shade of higher trees and instead of artificial fertilizers, they use natural compost from banana leaves and other plant waste, and of course, they do not use any insecticides or fungicides.

Optimum nutrient preservation. Our cocoa beans are not roasted and therefore retain as many minerals and other nutrients as possible. PlanetBIO crushed cocoa beans are fresh, while cocoa powder and cocoa butter are heated to slightly higher temperatures (around 60 °C) during the grinding process, so they are technically not present, but still contain significantly more nutrients than conventional cocoa products, in which cocoa beans are roasted.

PlanetBIO crushed cocoa beans are obtained by rough grinding of organic cocoa beans that grow on criollo cacao trees. The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) is a low evergreen tree originating from the tropical regions of Central and South America. With its gentle shiny leaves and beautiful white flowers it is interesting by itself, but it is known mainly for cocoa beans. They were valued by the Maya and Aztecs. They used cocoa beans as a currency and for the preparation of bitter, but nutritious drinks. 

Criollo is the variety of cocoa, that is of the highest quality in the world and is also most sought-after because of its rich and complex aroma, full of subtle flavors that last for a long time. Due to the low fertility and the complexity of cultivation, it accounts for only a few percent of world cocoa production.

Daily consumed quantity of cocoa nibs is not limited, however, at PlanetBIO we recommend moderate consumption, because cocoa nibs contain natural stimulants, especially theobromine and in a small part also caffeine. Stimulants in moderate amounts stimulate the functioning of the nervous system and fill us with enthusiasm and energy. If we overuse them, they can exhaust the gastric gland and have exactly the opposite effect. Therefore, PlanetBIO recommends moderate consumption of cocoa products and consumption in earlier parts of the day, because eating cocoa before bedtime can cause problems with insomnia.
