Why PlanetBIO maca?

More than organic PlanetBIO maca carries organic certificate, but it is much more than that – it is grown according to permaculture principles, using five-year crop rotation method.

Grown in high Andes,  where it has been traditionally grown and consumed for ages.

We visited our suppliers. We visited Peruvian farmers and suppliers of PlanetBIO maca in 2013, making sure about its organic quality.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an herbaceous biennial plant from the crucifer family, native to the high Andes of Peru. Its fleshy hypocotyl (the lowest part of the stem) has been used as a root vegetable and medicinal plant for millennia by the inhabitants of the Andes. Maca has long been used as a staple food, because it provides a rich source of carbohydrates in an environment where few crops grow. Maca grows best at the elevations above 4000 metres above sea level and is resistant to low temperatures, frost, strong winds and sunlight.

Historically, maca was often traded for lowland tropical food staples, such as papaya, corn or quinoa. Legends have it that maca was also eaten by the Incan warriors before battles, as it gave them strength and endurance they needed to fight. After a city was conquered, consuming maca was prohibited to protect women from the awakened libido of the warriors.

PlanetBIO maca is harvested manually with the leaves left on the fields as livestock feed or organic fertilizer. The »roots« are carefully selected and washed, then triturated into a fine mash and finely dried at temperatures below 45°C. When most of the water has evaporated, maca is ground into a fine powder that is then sieved to exclude larger particles.
